When I first stepped off the boat onto Gili Air, I knew this island would suit me.
Of the three Gili Islands, Air sits comfortably in the middle — small enough to walk around in an hour, lively enough to keep each day interesting, but slow enough to breathe fully.
As someone who loves photography, quiet beaches, and experiences with heart, I found Gili Air the kind of place that fills your camera roll and your soul.
Here are the FREE things I loved most — and why I’m returning in June.
Watching Sunrise Over Mount Rinjani
Mornings on Gili Air have their own kind of magic. I woke early most days and wandered down to the beach on the east side, barefoot, coffee in hand.
The sky turned from dusky pink to gold over Mount Rinjani across the water in Lombok.
The photographer in me couldn’t resist it; the traveller in me didn’t want to move.
Swimming with Turtles
I didn’t even need a boat. Just a mask I bought with me, reef shoes and smile.
One of the best things about Gili Air is how close the coral reefs are to the shore. I waded/swam from the northeast beach (Turtle Beach) and within minutes saw two green sea turtles, lazily drifting near the coral.
It’s one of those underwater moments that silences every thought.
Tip: Go early — before 9 a.m. — and use a reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile marine life.
Wandering and Photographing the Island on Foot
There are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Air — only bicycles, horses, and feet. I would not recommend bare feet – the sand and paths get very hot!
Being on foot meant that there were no sandy spots for my rented bike wheels to get stuck, and also that I explored the island at my own pace. The circle route around the island takes about an hour, but I stopped and started, pausing for photos I could not resist.
The light, especially late afternoon, makes even the simplest scene worth capturing.
