Why the Gili Islands Are Perfect for Solo Travellers
As a 55-year-old Australian woman travelling on my own—with a camera permanently slung over my shoulder—I’ve learned that what makes a destination “perfect” isn’t just beauty. It’s how safe I feel walking around. It’s whether I can afford to stay longer. It’s whether I can relax enough to really see a place.
That’s exactly why I fell in love with the Gili Islands.
Just off the coast of Lombok and not far from Bali, these three little islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno—have this gentle, welcoming energy that makes solo travel feel easy.
And at this stage of my life, easy is underrated.

Enjoying the Beach Clubs Without Being a Guest
One of the best things about Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno is how open and welcoming their beach clubs are. You don’t need to be staying at a fancy resort to swim in their pool, stretch out on a beanbag, or enjoy a sunset cocktail.
Things to do
Island-hopping, snorkelling with turtles, cooking classes, outdoor movies, sunset drinks, yoga, discovering a foodie heaven… be as relaxed or as busy as you choose.
Getting to the Gilis
Getting to the Gili Islands involves arriving by boat from either Bali or Lombok. Not as difficult as you think… and well worth it once you are on your tropical island!
Where to stay
There are so many accommodation options available to choose from, within all price ranges. Join us as we look at those recommended by solo travellers.
FEATURE YOUR BUSINESS
Want to promote your Gili business?
I will be in the Gili Islands again for the month of June 2026. I’d love to meet with you, ask you some questions that matter about your business, and take some photos.
No pressure. Just a cup of coffee and a smile.
